Slave to SensationSlave to Sensation by Nalini Singh

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of “rehabilitation” – the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was…Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion – and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities – or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation…

I have no idea why I waited so long to read this book! I’ve read Singh’s Guildhunter series and thought it was brilliant. Perhaps it was the slightly naff title, or the outdated cover image… I’m not entirely sure. What I can tell you is that I’m so glad I did eventually get round to it.

Singh’s world building is second to none. She doesn’t bore you with fact and history, but instead makes it all an integral part of the story, meaning that you’re swept along for the ride almost from the 1st page. Technically this does belong in PNR section of the library, but it also has elements of science fiction too. The world of the Psy (un-feeling psychic race) is very complicated but the author does well to bring us all in with a level of understanding I never expected.

The changeling society is one most of us PNR readers will have encountered at some point or another – “weres” by another name… in theory.. but again the world building is second to none and not once did I think “I’m sure I’ve met this pack somewhere before.”

A complete original series that surprised as well as entertained. Throw in some hugely sexy changelings in the form of our hero Lucas and his male dominated pack, a woman coming to terms with feeling anything for the first time (our reluctant heroine Sascha,)some HOT scenes of sexual discovery and you’ve got a masterpiece! I thoroughly recommend this series to EVERYONE, even those who think PNR isn’t for them, and especially to those who want something different and unique from their PNR world. You will not be disappointed.
